271 recruits from the 255th intake of Regular and Volunteer Naval Forces graduate at SLNS Shiksha

Upon the completion of their basic training, 211 Regular Naval Force recruits and 60 Volunteer Naval Force recruits from the 255th intake of the Sri Lanka Navy graduated in a lively ceremony at the main parade ground of SLNS Shiksha in Poonewa yesterday.

The ceremony, following naval traditions, had Rear Admiral Nishantha Peiris, Director General Operations, as the Chief Guest, invited by Captain Ranga De Zoysa, Commandant of SLNS Shiksha. The Chief Guest awarded recruits who showed outstanding performance during their basic training.

Recruit GVDH Wijerathna was named the Best Recruit of the 255th intake, while Recruit PHMDN Wijerathna received the award for the Highest Aggregate in all Subjects. The Best Sportsman award went to Recruit TSP De Silva, and Woman Recruit KVN Maduhansini received the Best Sportswoman title. Recruit UWGPA Chandrarathna won the award for Best Marksman. The ‘Dutugemunu’ Division was acknowledged as the Best Division of the 255th intake.

Addressing the new graduates, the Director General Operations congratulated them on completing their training. He stressed the need for a professional Navy, especially after the end of the long war and the importance of robust maritime defense. He assured the recruits that they would play a crucial role in safeguarding the nation from future terrorist threats. He encouraged them to contribute to the country’s development, maintain discipline, and provide exemplary service to the nation.

The Director General Operations highlighted the Sri Lanka Navy’s key role in safeguarding the national security of the island nation, ensuring maritime security, protection of aquatic resources, and maintaining navigation safety. He urged the new sailors to commit themselves to their duties with dedication and pride, upholding their family, personal honor, and the Navy’s honor.

Rear Admiral Nishantha Peiris thanked the parents of the new sailors for entrusting their sons and daughters to the Navy. He appreciated all naval personnel for their contributions to training activities. Special thanks were given to the officers and instructors of SLNS Shiksha for their dedication.

The ceremony included a colorful drill display by the new graduates, performances by the Navy Band and Cultural Troupe. Officials and family members of the recruits were also present at the event.
