During the inaugural session of the Orientation Programme for the newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) in Parliament, Hon. Speaker, Dr. Ashoka Ranwala, emphasized the importance of familiarizing oneself with parliamentary procedures to meet public expectations. He expressed gratitude to the Secretary General of Parliament and the parliamentary staff for organizing the workshop.

Hon. Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya highlighted the responsibility of MPs in fulfilling public expectations and shaping public perceptions of Parliament. She stressed the significance of equipping Parliamentarians with the necessary tools to serve the people effectively.

Addressing the political and social transformations, the Prime Minister noted the political maturity of the public and the historic female representation in Parliament. Hon. Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa, emphasized the importance of strengthening the concept of an open Parliament to bring MPs closer to citizens.

During the event, Secretary General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera, highlighted the unique feature of having 162 newly elected Members of Parliament in the 10th Parliament. The Orientation programme aims to provide MPs with a deep understanding of parliamentary procedures and practices.

The Orientation programme was attended by various officials and staff members of Parliament, including Hon. Deputy Speaker Dr Rizvie Salih, Hon. Deputy Chairperson of Committees Hemali Weerasekara, and Chief Government Whip and Minister (Dr.) Nalinda Jayathissa. A total of 168 Members of Parliament participated in the 1st day of the programme, which will continue for the next two days.

The Programme was attended by various parliamentary officials and staff, with 168 MPs participating on the first day and will continue for two more days.
