Navy seizes Kerala cannabis worth over Rs. 36 million in northwestern waters.
The Sri Lanka Navy seized approximately 90kg and 45g (wet weight) of Kerala cannabis found drifting in the waters during a special operation conducted in the sea area of Kappaladi, Kalpitiya recently.
Maintaining a continuous watch in the coastal and sea regions of the island, the Navy aims to prevent illegal activities through sea routes.
In line with these efforts, SLNS Vijaya in the Northwestern Naval Command carried out the operation using Inshore Patrol Craft. The operation resulted in the discovery of 03 suspicious polythene sacks adrift in the sea area of Kappaladi. The sacks contained approximately 90kg and 45g (wet weight) of Kerala cannabis divided into 30 parcels.
It is suspected that smugglers abandoned the Kerala cannabis due to naval operations making it difficult to bring the consignment into the country. The estimated street value of the seized Kerala cannabis is over Rs. 36 million. The Navy has securely stored the Kerala cannabis until further legal action is taken.
