Czech Republic Ambassador Engages in Talks with Sri Lankan Prime Minister to Enhance Bilateral Ties

Her Excellency Ms. Dr. Eliska Zigova, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Sri Lanka, held a meeting with the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, at Temple Trees on the 25th of March. This meeting highlighted the enduring friendship between the two nations and explored opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya extended a warm welcome to Ambassador Zigova and recognized the Czech Republic’s steadfast support for Sri Lanka. In return, Ambassador Zigova praised the new government’s dedication to democratic governance and its successful execution of two peaceful elections, signifying political stability and public confidence.

The discussions during the meeting aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic relations. Ambassador Zigova stressed the importance of existing agreements and reiterated her government’s willingness to broaden collaboration in critical sectors. Particular emphasis was placed on discussing the possibility of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on science and education, with the goal of fostering academic partnerships, research collaboration, and knowledge exchange between institutions in both countries.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya emphasized the “Clean Sri Lanka Programme,” a nationwide initiative focused on environmental conservation and urban sustainability. Moreover, the two dignitaries discussed enhancing tourism, with the Prime Minister extending an invitation to more Czech visitors to explore Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and expanding eco-tourism sector.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Embassy of the Czech Republic to Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan delegation included Mr. Pradeep Saputhanthri, Secretary to the Prime Minister, and Mr. P.R.S.S. Gunaratna, Director General of the Europe & North America Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
