On Friday, a powerful earthquake shook Southeast Asia, resulting in the collapse of a skyscraper under construction in Bangkok and causing damage to buildings in Myanmar’s second-largest city.

According to Thailand’s National Institute of Emergency Medicine, at least one individual lost their life, and several workers were rescued from the debris of the collapsed skyscraper.

 

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake, which hit around lunchtime, registered a magnitude of 7.7 and occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). A significant aftershock followed the initial quake.

 

The seismic event’s epicenter was located approximately 17.2 km from Mandalay city in Myanmar, which is home to about 1.5 million residents.
