The Government Initiates Measures to Enhance Healthcare Facilities and Professional Standards
Offer your service with compassion. – Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya noted that the government is implementing measures to improve facilities and professional standards in the healthcare sector, emphasizing the expectation of compassionate service from nurses and midwives.
These comments were made by the Prime Minister during a ceremony held yesterday (24) at Temple Trees to officially appoint 3,147 nurses in the health sector.
Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya remarked:
I send my best wishes to everyone starting a new chapter by joining public service as nurses today. Nursing is among the world’s most significant and respected professions.
Nursing is more than a job; it’s a vital humanitarian service. During vulnerable times, people turn to you for safety and care.
Beyond medical care, your smile, manner of speaking, compassion, and the way you care greatly aid in healing.
Your service involves immense dedication, requiring both physical and mental effort. Often, you barely have a moment to sit or sleep adequately, impacting your personal life and relationships. We appreciate that these sacrifices affect not only you but also your loved ones.
I take this moment to thank you for your continued commitment and dedication.
Under the policy ‘A Prosperous Country, a Beautiful Life’, our aim is to make this vision a reality for all citizens. A beautiful life starts with healthy individuals, physically and mentally, and the government is dedicated to fortifying the healthcare sector while providing necessary facilities and professional training.
There is a significant demand for nurses locally and internationally. We aim to offer suitable salaries, promotions, and training opportunities to foster your professional growth. Creating a safe and positive working environment is crucial for the physical and mental wellbeing of employees. I trust that the Minister and Ministry will continue to address these needs.
The nursing profession is predominantly female. In our society, women often bear multiple responsibilities as wives and mothers, and these roles are not diminished by their profession. As a government, we are mindful of these factors, and we are obligated to create an environment where you can enjoy a fulfilling personal life.
During the event, Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, also shared his thoughts:
This marks the largest single batch of nursing appointments granted at once, and the most significant recruitment into public service at one time since the new government began.
We are in a period of revival, working together with commitment to transform this nation. We hold great aspirations for the future and achieving them requires collective effort from everyone, including the entire public service. Compassionate action from the public sector is vital for progress and revival, as lack of efficiency, productivity, and compassion will hinder our goals.
The event was attended by Secretary to the Ministry of Health, Specialist Dr. Anil Jasinghe, along with Additional Secretaries, officials, and staff of the Ministry of Health.
