President of Sri Lanka Seeks UNESCO’s Assistance in Modernizing Education Sector

President Ranil Wickremesinghe revealed plans to approach UNESCO for assistance in a comprehensive modernization project for Sri Lanka’s education sector, as well as seeking support from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank for these reforms.

During the opening session of the Student Parliament of Buddhuruvagala Maha Vidyalaya in Monaragala on the 17th, President Wickremesinghe emphasized the aim of establishing a progressive education system integrated with modern technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI). He envisions empowering young individuals with the necessary skills to succeed in today’s world.

The inaugural session of the school’s student parliament was held at the Chamber Hall of the Presidential Secretariat following an invitation extended during President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s recent visit to Buddhuruvagala Maha Vidyalaya, Monaragala.

In keeping with a promise to the students, a valuable assortment of musical instruments was promptly presented to the school, prompting appreciation from the students. The event was attended by 96 student parliament members, with certificates being distributed under the guidance of Secretary to the President Saman Ekanayake and Secretary-General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe, speaking to the students, stressed that future leaders who will shape the nation will emerge from these student parliaments. He emphasized that the experience gained through these platforms will be priceless and expressed his delight in seeing student parliaments active in numerous schools.

The President also discussed the historical and ancient background of the old Parliament Building, now the Presidential Secretariat, engaging in a cordial conversation with the students and educating them about the parliamentary system, including the Constituent Assembly.

Secretary-General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera elucidated the function of Parliament.

The principal of Buddhuruvagala Maha Vidyalaya, Monaragala H.M.U.B. Herath, along with several teachers and parents, were also in attendance during this event.
