Trade Minister holds talks on bilateral trade with New Zealand high commissioner

Trade Minister Nalin Fernando met with the New Zealand high commissioner H.E David Pine, today (05th) at the Trade Ministry premises.

The trade minister mentioned that Sri Lanka is actively working towards diversifying its exports by supporting the SME sector. He also stressed the importance of boosting Sri Lankan exports to the New Zealand market in order to lessen the significant trade gap between the two countries.

The high commissioner acknowledged Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage and history, stating that the country has vast opportunities in the tourism industry. He highlighted his efforts in facilitating connections between relevant stakeholders in both countries.

In the meeting, the high commissioner emphasized the need for stronger partnerships between Sri Lanka and New Zealand not only in tourism but also in trade, sports, dairy industry, education, and culture. He also noted that Sri Lankans migrating to New Zealand are highly skilled individuals.

To enhance Sri Lanka-New Zealand trade relations, the high commissioner underscored the importance of developing identified Sri Lankan products to target sophisticated international markets like New Zealand with smaller populations.

Both parties discussed plans to further strengthen their existing relations.
