Meeting between Sri Lankan Ambassador to Jordan and Zarqa Chamber of Commerce members

The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, J.A.D.S. Priyangika Wijegunasekara, visited the Zarqa Chamber of Commerce and engaged in a fruitful discussion to enhance trade and economic cooperation between the two countries recently.

During the meeting, the trade and economic relations between Jordan and Sri Lanka were assessed in order to explore opportunities for improving trade, tourism, and investment collaboration between the two nations.

The Chairman of the Zarqa Chamber, Hussein Shraim, highlighted the importance of strengthening the existing tourism partnership between Jordan and Sri Lanka, as well as potential methods to promote mutual tourism by connecting tourists with travel agencies in both countries.

Ambassador Wijegunasekara mentioned that the relationship between Jordan and Sri Lanka is evolving in the areas of trade, business, and labor, pointing out that bilateral ties were established in 1965 and have been continuously growing.

The Ambassador underscored the significance of enhancing trade and economic relations between Jordan and Sri Lanka and encouraged Jordanian business people to invest in the Port City in Colombo, leveraging the favorable business environment in Sri Lanka. She also proposed the deployment of skilled Sri Lankan workers in industrial zones, considering the successful cooperation in the Jordanian industrial sector.

Additionally, the Ambassador expressed her willingness to increase the trade volume between the two countries and support Jordanian companies in exploring opportunities to export olive oil and Dead Sea salt products to Sri Lanka.

Chairman Shraim reported a significant growth in the trade exchange between the two nations in the first five months of 2024. He noted that Jordan primarily imports fabrics, tea, coffee, spices, and coconut-based products from Sri Lanka, while its major exports to Sri Lanka include iron products, furniture, chemicals, and textiles.

Both parties agreed during the meeting to organize joint economic initiatives to boost trade and economic cooperation, as well as enhance collaboration in other areas.

The discussion was attended by the Zarqa Chamber’s Board of Directors, including Jihad Al-Marairah, Imad Abu Al-Bandoura, Fayez Askaka, Bassem Al-Kilani, and General Manager Lara Al-Shishani, along with Second Secretary of the Embassy Gajithra Nawan, and Mission’s Translator Zeinab Elkayed.
