Cabinet gives green light to import eggs, again

COLOMBO (Data 1st) – Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers have as quickly as as soon as extra granted approval to import eggs.

Commerce Minister Nalin Fernando speaking to Data 1st acknowledged the Cabinet granted approval to his proposal on Monday (9).

He acknowledged eggs may be imported sooner than the tip of the week from India, and the distribution may be handed over to the private sector, whereas Lanka Sathosa may be involved throughout the sale of eggs.

The federal authorities decided to import eggs as a solution to cope with the extreme prices of eggs, as a result of the native worth of an egg is between Rs. 60/- to Rs. 70/-.

Nonetheless, in early January the All Ceylon Egg Producers Affiliation warned that if the federal authorities goes ahead with its decision to import eggs, the native producers would step away from the enterprise.

The Chairman of the All Ceylon Egg Producers Affiliation speaking to Data 1st acknowledged that importing eggs would put the native enterprise in peril.

In December 2022, as a solution to the extreme worth of eggs, a selected program was launched by the Authorities to advertise eggs on the worth of Rs. 55/ throughout the Colombo and Gampaha districts.

Eggs had been supplied for Rs. 55/- on the Fort Railway Station, Dematagoda, Slave Island, Dehiwala, Battaramulla, Nugegoda, Maharagama, Meegoda Monetary Center, Narahenpita Monetary Center, Torrington, and Homagama.

In addition to, eggs had been supplied for Rs. 55/- in Wattala, Ja-Ela, Ragama, Negombo, Kiribathgoda, Kadawatha, and Peliyagoda.

This was a joint program by the Sri Lankan authorities and the Egg Producers Affiliation.

Sri Lanka’s eggs had been spherical 20 to 25 rupees sooner than the rupee collapsed from 200 to 360 to the US dollar.
