A significant discussion was held between the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Ramalingum Chandrasekar, and H.E. Miyon Lee, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Sri Lanka, to enhance bilateral relations and collaboration in fisheries and oceanic resource management.

During the meeting, the Minister expressed condolences for the recent tragic aviation incident in South Korea and solidarity on behalf of Sri Lanka. He also acknowledged and appreciated the Republic of Korea’s support and relations with Sri Lanka.

The Minister explored opportunities for partnership with private South Korean companies to enhance operations under Sri Lanka’s Northsea Ltd, a state-owned Fishnet Manufacturing Company managing three factories.

Ambassador Lee highlighted the importance of establishing an Advanced Data Center for the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) in collaboration with the Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology (KIOST) to strengthen aquatic resource research and development. The Ambassador expressed confidence in the success of this project that had been under discussion for some time.

During the meeting, Ambassador Lee urged the Minister to consider implementing a digital taxation system project for the Colombo Municipal Council that had been previously reviewed and paused.

Discussions also included efforts to enhance employment opportunities for Sri Lankan fishermen in the Korean job market by increasing the fisheries sector quota, aiming to improve livelihoods for these individuals.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining and expanding these cooperative efforts, emphasizing the strong ties between Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea.
