Egg producers respond to govt’s decision to import eggs

The All Ceylon Egg Producers’ Affiliation says that if the federal authorities takes measures to import eggs, they’re going to promote eggs at a decrease value than which the imported eggs are purchased.

Treasurer of the affiliation, Vijaya Alwis stated that they solely receive a income of Rs. 2 when an egg is purchased on the value of Rs. 50. 

“We receive solely Rs.2 income by selling eggs at Rs. 50, however when the Minister imported eggs, we’re going to promote the eggs at a worth lower than the imported eggs. If he offers eggs at Rs. 25, we’re going to promote them at Rs. 20,” he talked about.

However, it was seen that the retailers who’ve been selling eggs for Rs. 65 and above in numerous retailers, have been selling eggs at Rs. 55 at the moment (Jan. 03), after the Cabinet of Ministers had granted approval to import eggs yesterday (Jan. 02).

Minister of Commerce, Nalin Fernando launched the proposal to the cabinet yesterday, regarding the state of affairs that has occurred due to the continuous rise throughout the worth of eggs, and accordingly, the cabinet had agreed to import eggs if the need arises to handle the prices.

Within the meantime, the egg producers’ affiliation had moreover launched eggs in lorries and purchased them to the retailers throughout the Narahenpita and Welisara monetary centres at a wholesale worth of Rs. 53 at the moment, throughout the wake of the federal authorities’s dedication to import eggs.
