Egg producers respond to govt’s decision to import eggs

The All Ceylon Egg Producers’ Affiliation says that if the federal government takes measures to import eggs, they are going to promote eggs at a lower cost than which the imported eggs are bought.

Treasurer of the affiliation, Vijaya Alwis said that they solely obtain a revenue of Rs. 2 when an egg is bought on the price of Rs. 50. 

“We obtain solely Rs.2 revenue by promoting eggs at Rs. 50, but when the Minister imported eggs, we are going to promote the eggs at a value decrease than the imported eggs. If he provides eggs at Rs. 25, we are going to promote them at Rs. 20,” he mentioned.

Nevertheless, it was noticed that the merchants who have been promoting eggs for Rs. 65 and above in a number of retailers, have been promoting eggs at Rs. 55 at this time (Jan. 03), after the Cupboard of Ministers had granted approval to import eggs yesterday (Jan. 02).

Minister of Commerce, Nalin Fernando introduced the proposal to the cupboard yesterday, concerning the state of affairs that has occurred because of the continual rise within the value of eggs, and accordingly, the cupboard had agreed to import eggs if the necessity arises to manage the costs.

In the meantime, the egg producers’ affiliation had additionally introduced eggs in lorries and bought them to the retailers within the Narahenpita and Welisara financial centres at a wholesale value of Rs. 53 at this time, within the wake of the federal government’s determination to import eggs.
