Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh Initiates Tree Planting Campaign to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh, in partnership with the Riyadh Municipality, has launched a tree planting campaign in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to celebrate the 50th  anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia. This initiative is also in line with Saudi Arabia’s Green Initiative (SGI) as part of Vision 2030, which aims to plant 10 billion trees in the Kingdom.

The Riyadh Municipality has designated five parks for the Sri Lankan community to take part in the tree planting program.

The tree planting events were overseen by Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Ameer Ajwad, at five different parks: Salam Park on 23 November 2024; Ar Rabi Park on 07 December 2024; Malqa Park on 14 December 2024; Al Darseena Park on 21 December 2024; and Irqah Park on 30 December 2024.

The gatherings were attended by Director of the Department of Partnership, Dr. Arif Al Sulami, alongside Riyadh Municipality Residents; Director of the Municipal Volunteer Department, Ghada binth Abdullah Al-Omran; and other senior officials from the Riyadh Municipality. The team from the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh, their families, Sri Lankan community members, Sri Lankan delegates to UNCCD COP 16, and the students of the Sri Lankan international school in Saudi actively participated in the events.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh remains committed to its tree planting initiative in other regions of the Kingdom, showing solidarity and support for the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI).


The Sri Lankan Embassy in Riyadh, in collaboration with the Riyadh Municipality, launched a tree planting initiative in Saudi Arabia to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia. The initiative supports Saudi Arabia’s Green Initiative (SGI) to plant 10 billion trees by 2030. Five parks in Riyadh were allocated for the Sri Lankan community to participate in tree planting. The events were attended by high-ranking officials from the Riyadh Municipality and the Sri Lankan Embassy, as well as residents and school children. The initiative aims to strengthen solidarity and support for the SGI in Saudi Arabia.
