New Government Expected to Follow Streamlined Economic Development Plan
Prime Minister and Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, Cooperative Development, Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, expressed that this is a pivotal moment to kickstart the economic development plan of the country.
The new government aims to operate based on a well-structured plan. Dr. Harini Amarasuriya highlighted this during a special meeting on 03-10-2024 with officials from the Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, Cooperative Development, Industry and Entrepreneurship Development at the Auditorium of the Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Division to discuss the future initiatives of the Ministry.
During the meeting, the officials and affiliated institutions briefed the Prime Minister on the current status and challenges within the institutions. There was an extensive discussion on various topics such as enhancing international trade, ensuring food security, maintaining price transparency of essential goods, regulating the quality of imported consumer goods, improving export goods quality, providing financial support for entrepreneurial projects, securing a continuous supply of raw materials for industries, and restructuring public enterprises. Dr. Harini Amarasuriya inquired about each institution and instructed prompt resolutions to identified issues. The discussion also highlighted the necessity of establishing a dedicated food security authority in Sri Lanka and implementing food safety laws.
Dr. Harini Amarasuriya further stressed the importance of collective action and adherence to a well-structured plan to maximize the opportunity for economic development. The Prime Minister emphasized the significance of maintaining effective coordination among institutions.
The meeting was attended by Secretary to the Prime Minister Pradeep Saputhanthri, Secretary to the Ministry of Industry M.M. Nayeemudeen, Prime Minister’s Coordinating Officers Tharindu Wanigasuriya and Chathuranga Abeysinghe, additional secretaries of the ministry, Director Generals of affiliated institutions, senior government officials, and industrialists.

The government aims to work according to a streamlined plan and address issues such as international trade, food security, transparency in pricing, and quality standards for imports and exports. The Prime Minister emphasized the need for prompt solutions to institutional problems and coordination between organizations. There is a focus on establishing a separate authority for food security and introducing laws for food safety. The discussion involved various government officials, directors of affiliated institutions, and industrialists.
