Upon profitable completion of naval coaching from the Naval and Maritime Academy, Trincomalee, he was commissioned within the rank of Performing Sub Lieutenant in 1989 and graduated from the Common Sir John Kotelawala Defence College with a Bachelor of Arts Diploma (Defence Research) with honours.

Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera is a recipient of Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) thrice for his conspicuous show of gallantry in fight and Uttama Seva Padakkama (USP) for his unblemished service and devotion to responsibility. Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera is a proud product of the Royal Faculty, Colombo.
