President Ranil Wickremesinghe shared his plans to ensure that returning migrant workers can maintain a decent standard of living after completing their service abroad. He expressed his gratitude to these workers for their essential role in contributing foreign exchange during the recent economic crisis and acknowledged their significant contribution to the country’s economy.

These remarks were made by the President during the inauguration ceremony of the “Wigamanika Harasara” initiative, held today (21) at the Sathyawadi Ground in Kurunegala. This initiative is aimed at recognizing the impact of migrant workers on the Sri Lankan economy.

The launch of the “Wigamanika Harasara” program, which aims to assess the contribution of migrant workers to Sri Lanka’s economy, took place across the country, starting in the North West Province. Approximately 5,000 migrants from districts such as Kurunegala, Puttalam, Anuradhapura, Matale, and Kegalle participated in this initiative.

During the event, the President presented Rs.50,000 each to migrant workers as seed capital to support their self-employment ventures under a welfare benefits program managed by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE). This initiative is designed to empower the migrant community economically and socially, confirm their rights, collect ideas and proposals for policy development. The President also interacted personally with migrant workers, discussing their well-being and engaging in friendly conversations.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe further elaborated;

The government has provided support to returning migrant workers who have earned foreign exchange to assist them in starting a new chapter in their lives. This support is not a reward or grant but a right earned through their dedicated service. Many returning individuals may no longer find their previous jobs suitable for their aspirations, and this program aims to help those with the motivation and determination to carve out a new path. I encourage you to seize this opportunity.

Your contributions of foreign exchange were critical for our recovery during the country’s economic crisis. Without this support, our economy would not have been able to stabilize. Your invaluable contributions enabled us to successfully celebrate festivals and achieve economic progress.

Moving forward, we need to focus on advancing our country by enhancing our foreign exchange reserves and developing an export-driven economy, attracting foreign investments, promoting tourism, and modernizing agriculture.

While large companies are attracting investors, efforts are being made to uplift the common people through programs like “Aswesuma” and “Urumaya” to ensure that everyone in the country receives their rights. Additionally, funds have been allocated to provide essential loans for small and medium-sized businesses, fostering progress at the grassroots level.

An export-driven economy requires individuals to focus on the economic development of their villages. Building a strong economy at the national level while supporting local development is crucial for the future of our country. Politics should be about making informed decisions for the future and working towards the country’s development.
