Prime Minister’s Directive: Implement guaranteed price for mung beans without delay
The Prime Minister wrote a letter to the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, Mahinda Amaraweera and the Minister of Trade, Commerce, and Food Safety, Nalin Fernando.
By educating and motivating farmers to cultivate mung beans in Ipanella as an intermediate crop, through the food security and economic regeneration committees, all the District and Divisional Secretariat systems, as well as the regional development and agriculture committees, have led to a highly successful mung harvest entering the market.
District Secretaries have confirmed that there is currently a very reasonable wholesale price for mung beans.
However, the Prime Minister anticipates that in the upcoming weeks, as mung bean crops flood the market on a large scale, immediate intervention will be necessary to prevent farmers from facing financial difficulties due to falling market prices.
Hence, the Prime Minister stresses in his letter that the Ministries should hold discussions and announce a guaranteed price for mung beans at the earliest opportunity.
