The Ceremonial Induction of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science took place at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo on January 7th. Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya graced the event as the Chief Guest.

During the ceremony, Prof. Udeni P. Nawagamuwa was appointed as the President for the year 2025 of SLAAS, the largest science association in Sri Lanka.
The Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, highlighted that “As the foremost scientific body in Sri Lanka, SLAAS embodies a diverse and dynamic community with over 5,000 members across various disciplines. It truly reflects the richness and diversity of Sri Lanka’s scientific landscape.”

SLAAS consistently promotes the advancement of science and technology, preparing future generations of scientists to tackle both local and global challenges. While celebrating these achievements, it is crucial to acknowledge the existing challenges and focus on areas that need improvement. A thriving intellectual community, robust research and development infrastructure, and mentorship opportunities for young researchers are crucial for the country’s progress.

However, there is a need to address shortcomings in the current research culture. The focus should shift from mere promotional schemes to fostering innovation and creativity. Science should be a fundamental part of every child’s education, with an emphasis on impactful and rigorous research. This is essential for the country’s growth.

The Government plays a vital role in supporting and promoting scientific education and research in Sri Lanka. There is a need to enhance our current efforts in this regard. The government has outlined a comprehensive approach, titled Quantum Leap, to drive scientific and technological initiatives in the country.

This framework aims to position Sri Lanka as a center for scientific discoveries and technological advancements. Moreover, the government has introduced a science and technology policy framework, emphasizing the importance of science and research as key drivers of economic recovery and national development.”
