Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda takes over as the 26th Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy

In his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Hon. Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the President of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, has promoted Rear Admiral Kanchana Banagoda to the rank of Vice Admiral and appointed him as the 26th Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy effective from today (31st December 2024).

Former Commander of the Navy Admiral Priyantha Perera, in a symbolic gesture, presented the Commander’s Sword and officially handed over the duties of the Command to the incoming Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda at the Navy Headquarters this morning. Shortly after, the new Commander of the Navy received a Guard of Honour in accordance with naval traditions at the Navy Headquarters.

Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda is a proud product of S. Thomas’ College, Bandarawela and Bandarawela Central College. He joined the Sri Lanka Navy on 15th September 1989 and has a distinguished career spanning over 34 years with a variety of educational achievements and training experiences.

With his career advancements leading to his recent promotion to Vice Admiral, Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda has displayed exceptional leadership and dedication in various naval commands and responsibilities throughout his career, earning the respect and recognition of his peers and superiors.

Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, a decorated officer, has been honored with several prestigious awards for his bravery, service, and commendable accomplishments in his naval career. Apart from his professional responsibilities, he finds joy in various hobbies and recreational activities, showcasing a well-rounded personality beyond his naval duties.

The official assumption of office by the newly appointed Commander of the Navy was marked by a ceremonial event with blessings from clergy representing different religious beliefs. Alongside him were his family members, including his spouse and children, adding warmth and pride to the significant occasion.

Banagoda has held various key positions within the Navy and has successfully led multiple naval commands. In addition to his naval accomplishments, he is also involved in various extracurricular activities. Banagoda officially assumed office in a ceremony attended by clergy from different faiths and his family.
